How Powered Air-Purifying Respirators Work

A powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) uses a battery-powered blower to draw workplace air through approved filters or cartridges and deliver filtered air to a compatible facepiece, hood, helmet, or headtop.

A PAPR must be selected as a complete approved respiratory system. Start with the identified hazard, required protection level, facepiece or headtop style, filter or cartridge, blower, battery, breathing tube, and workplace respiratory-protection program. 3M Versaflo PAPR

3M Versaflo TR-300+, TR-600 & TR-800 PAPR Systems

Keyline Safety's current PAPR collection is strongly centered on 3M Versaflo. Current product data includes TR-300+ systems and accessories, TR-600 assemblies and kits, and TR-800 systems, along with compatible batteries, chargers, belts, breathing tubes, filters, cartridges, headtops, and accessories.

The TR-300+, TR-600, and TR-800 families are not interchangeable bundles. Confirm the exact blower platform, battery, filter or cartridge, breathing tube, headtop, belt, and accessories approved for the system being configured.

PAPR systems may use loose-fitting hoods or head covers, helmet or headtop assemblies, or approved tight-fitting facepieces depending on the system. The correct interface affects fit-testing requirements, integrated head or face protection, comfort, mobility, and the protection level available from the approved configuration.

PAPR filters and cartridges are selected for specific contaminants and blower platforms. Current Keyline inventory includes high-efficiency particulate filters and combination gas, vapour, and particulate cartridges for compatible 3M Versaflo systems.

Choose the Right Air System

PAPR vs. Supplied-Air Respirators

PAPRs are air-purifying respirators: they filter ambient workplace air through approved media. Supplied-air respirators deliver breathing air from an approved source through a hose and regulator system. These are different respiratory-protection approaches.

PAPRs should only be used where the hazard assessment and respirator approval allow an air-purifying system. They are not a substitute for supplied breathing air in oxygen-deficient or other atmospheres where an air-purifying respirator is not permitted. PAPR Readiness

Batteries, Airflow Checks, Inspection & Maintenance

A PAPR depends on more than the blower. Batteries, chargers, airflow indicators, filters, cartridges, breathing tubes, belts, headtops, seals, and other accessories all need to be compatible and serviceable.

Inspect the complete system according to the manufacturer and employer respiratory program. Confirm battery condition and charge, airflow or alarm checks where required, filter or cartridge condition, breathing-tube connections, headtop condition, seals, belts, covers, and other model-specific components before use.
