Supplied Breathing Air

How Supplied-Air Respirator Systems Work

A supplied-air respirator (SAR) delivers breathing air from an approved source through compatible air lines, hoses, regulators, valves, breathing tubes, and a facepiece, hood, or headtop. Unlike an air-purifying respirator, the system does not rely on the worker breathing through an ambient-air filter or cartridge.

The complete system must be selected around the identified hazard, breathing-air source, hose and fitting configuration, worker interface, mobility, pressure or flow requirements, and the employer's respiratory-protection program. Return to Respiratory Protection & Respirators for the broader category.

Supplied-Air Components

Air-Regulating Valves, Cooling Valves & Airline Assemblies

Keyline Safety's current supplied-air collection includes 3M Versaflo air-regulating and cooling-valve products such as V-100, V-100SR, V-300, V-300DA and related system components.

Choose valves and regulators only as part of an approved system. Confirm the breathing-air source, pressure range, fittings, hose type and length, worker interface, temperature-management needs, and manufacturer-approved configuration.

Airline Configuration

Supplied-Air Hoses, Fittings & Connections

Supplied-air systems depend on compatible hose assemblies and fittings that maintain the required air delivery from the approved breathing-air source to the worker. Current Keyline product data includes 3M supplied-air hose assemblies such as W-9445 series hoses and compatible Schrader-style fittings on selected products.

Hose length, inside diameter, couplings, fittings, number of hose sections, pressure loss, and approved combinations are system-specific. Do not substitute shop-air hose or unapproved fittings for respiratory breathing-air components.

Worker Interface

Headtops, Facepieces & Respiratory Accessories

Depending on the approved supplied-air system, workers may use compatible hoods, headtops, helmets, or tight-fitting facepieces. The correct interface affects fit testing, integrated head or face protection, mobility, and system configuration.

Browse Respiratory Protection Accessories for headtops, hoods, breathing tubes, seals, visor components and other respiratory-system parts. Compare Full Face Respirators and Half Face Respirators where the respiratory program calls for a compatible tight-fitting facepiece.

Choosing the Air Source

Supplied Air vs. PAPR Systems

Supplied-air respirators receive breathing air from an approved external source, while powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) use a blower to filter ambient workplace air. They are different respiratory-protection approaches and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Compare Powered Air-Purifying Respirators when an approved air-purifying system is appropriate. Where the hazard assessment requires supplied breathing air, the complete SAR configuration must follow the manufacturer, breathing-air quality requirements, and workplace respiratory program.

Program Essentials

Breathing-Air Quality, Inspection & System Readiness

A supplied-air respirator system depends on the quality and reliability of its breathing-air source as well as the condition of hoses, fittings, valves, regulators, breathing tubes, and worker interfaces.

Before use, inspect the complete system according to the manufacturer and employer respiratory program. Confirm the approved air source, required pressure or flow, hose and fitting condition, valve or regulator operation, connections, facepiece or headtop condition, and any model-specific checks. Breathing-air quality must meet the requirements that apply to the system and workplace.

Business & Program Orders

Need Supplied-Air Respirators for a Facility or Respiratory Program?

Keyline Safety can support supplied-air respiratory equipment orders for painting, manufacturing, industrial maintenance, laboratories, heavy industry, utilities, and other workplaces.

For a quote, provide the identified hazard, number of workers, approved breathing-air source, preferred facepiece or headtop, hose lengths and fittings, valve or regulator requirements, mobility needs, replacement parts, and site-specific respiratory-program requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a supplied-air respirator?

A supplied-air respirator delivers breathing air from an approved external source through compatible hoses, regulators, valves and a facepiece, hood or headtop. It is different from an air-purifying respirator because it does not depend on filtering the surrounding workplace air at the worker.

What is the difference between a supplied-air respirator and a PAPR?

A supplied-air respirator receives breathing air from an approved source through an airline, while a PAPR uses a battery-powered blower to filter ambient workplace air. The correct approach depends on the hazard assessment and approved respiratory program.

Compare Powered Air-Purifying Respirators for air-purifying powered systems.

What breathing-air source is required for a supplied-air respirator?

The system must use an approved breathing-air source that meets the requirements specified for the respirator and workplace. The source, pressure or flow, air quality, filtration or purification equipment, alarms where required, and distribution system must all follow the applicable respiratory program and manufacturer instructions.

Can I use any air hose with a supplied-air respirator?

No. Use only hose types, lengths, couplings and fitting combinations approved for the specific respirator system. Hose diameter, total length, number of sections and pressure loss can affect system performance.

What do supplied-air valves and regulators do?

Air-regulating valves and related assemblies control or manage the delivered airflow within an approved supplied-air system. Selected 3M Versaflo products also provide cooling functions. The valve, fittings, pressure range and worker interface must match the approved system configuration.

Do supplied-air respirators require fit testing?

It depends on the worker interface. Tight-fitting supplied-air facepieces generally require fit testing, while loose-fitting hoods or headtops may have different requirements. Follow the exact respirator approval, manufacturer instructions and employer respiratory-protection program.

Can supplied air be used with full-face or half-face respirators?

Some supplied-air systems are approved for use with specific tight-fitting facepieces, while others use hoods or headtops. Compatibility is model-specific. Review Full Face Respirators and Half Face Respirators only where the selected supplied-air system approves those interfaces.

What should be checked before using a supplied-air respirator?

Inspect the complete system according to the manufacturer: breathing-air source, required pressure or flow, hose and fitting condition, valves or regulators, breathing tubes, connectors, facepiece or headtop, seals, and any alarm or system-specific checks. Remove damaged or incompatible components from service.

Does Keyline Safety carry 3M supplied-air respirator equipment?

Yes. Current Keyline product data includes 3M Versaflo supplied-air valve assemblies, cooling-valve kits, dual-airline components, air-regulating valves, supplied-air hoses and related accessories.

Browse 3M for related respiratory equipment.

Can Keyline Safety help configure a supplied-air system for a workplace?

Yes. Keyline Safety can support facility and respiratory-program orders. Share the identified hazard, number of workers, breathing-air source, facepiece or headtop requirements, hose lengths and fittings, valve or regulator needs, mobility requirements, replacement parts and site-specific program requirements when requesting a quote.

Shop supplied-air respirators and systems in Canada for workplace respiratory programs. Compare 3M Versaflo supplied-air valves, cooling-valve kits, dual-airline assemblies, air-regulating valves, supplied-air hoses, fittings and compatible respiratory-system components.

Compare Powered Air-Purifying Respirators for powered air-purifying systems, browse Respiratory Protection Accessories for compatible parts and worker interfaces, or return to Respiratory Protection & Respirators for the complete respiratory category.
