Personal Fall Arrest

Self-Retracting Lifelines in a Complete Fall Protection System

A self-retracting lifeline (SRL) is a connecting device that extends and retracts as a worker moves while remaining part of a complete fall-protection system. The SRL must be paired with a compatible full-body harness, approved anchorage, connectors, and a work-at-height plan.

Build the system around safety harnesses, fall protection anchor points, and the broader fall protection equipment category.

SRL Selection

Choose SRLs by Line Type, Length & Mobility

Keyline Safety's current SRL assortment includes web and cable lifelines, compact personal SRLs, extended-length units, single- and twin-leg configurations, quick-connect models, and larger retractable devices for different work-at-height applications.

Compare line material, working length, housing and connector configuration, single- versus twin-leg mobility, worker weight range, anchorage location, clearance, inspection requirements, and the exact manufacturer's approved use. A longer line or larger housing is not automatically the better choice—the system needs to match the work area.

Application-Specific SRLs

Leading-Edge & Foot-Level SRL Applications

Some current Keyline products are specifically identified for leading-edge or foot-level tie-off applications, including selected 3M DBI-SALA Nano-Lok Edge, 3M Protecta Rebel, and Tractel Blocfor models. These applications can place different forces and abrasion conditions on the lifeline than conventional overhead anchorage.

Do not assume every SRL is approved for leading-edge or foot-level use. Verify the exact model's intended application, anchorage location, edge suitability, required clearance, connector configuration, and manufacturer instructions before selection.

Rescue & Retrieval

SRLs for Rescue, Retrieval & Confined-Space Systems

Certain SRLs are designed with retrieval or rescue functionality and may be integrated into confined-space systems, davits, brackets, or other approved rescue arrangements. The retrieval feature and mounting method are model-specific.

For confined-space applications, browse confined space rescue and descent equipment and ensure the SRL, mounting bracket, davit or anchor, harness, rescue plan, and other system components are compatible.

Leading SRL Brands

Business & Project Orders

Need SRLs for a Crew, Facility or Work-at-Height Program?

Keyline Safety can support larger self-retracting lifeline orders for construction crews, utilities, industrial facilities, maintenance teams, confined-space programs, contractors, infrastructure projects, and other work-at-height applications.

For a quote, provide the number of workers, harnesses in use, preferred line length and material, single- or twin-leg needs, anchor location, leading-edge conditions, rescue or retrieval requirements, preferred brands, and any project-specific standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right self-retracting lifeline?

Choose the SRL around the worker, harness, intended task, line length and material, anchor location, required mobility, fall clearance, edge conditions, connector arrangement, rescue needs, and the exact manufacturer's approved use.

Review Safety Harnesses and Fall Protection Anchor Points when building the complete system.

What is the difference between an SRL and a fall protection lanyard?

An SRL extends and retracts as the worker moves, while many lanyards provide a fixed or adjustable connection length. Which option is appropriate depends on the work method, anchor location, required mobility, fall clearance, edge conditions, and the equipment specified for the application.

Compare Fall Protection Lanyards for fixed or adjustable connecting-device options.

Should I choose a web or cable self-retracting lifeline?

Web and cable SRLs can be suited to different work environments, device designs, lengths, and hazards. Selection should be based on the exact model's intended use, abrasion or edge exposure, working length, weight, connector type, environmental conditions, and manufacturer documentation rather than line material alone.

What is the difference between single-leg and twin-leg SRLs?

A single-leg SRL provides one retractable connection. Twin-leg SRLs provide two retractable legs and may be used in work methods where the worker transfers between approved connection points while maintaining the intended tie-off strategy. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for connection, leg management, and unused-leg attachment.

Can any self-retracting lifeline be used at a leading edge?

No. Leading-edge and foot-level applications require equipment specifically approved for those conditions. Selected products in Keyline's catalog are identified for leading-edge use, but this must be verified on the exact model. Confirm the approved anchor location, edge conditions, clearance, line type, connectors, and manufacturer instructions.

What is a retrieval self-retracting lifeline?

A retrieval SRL combines self-retracting fall-protection functionality with a model-specific retrieval or rescue feature. These units can be used in certain rescue or confined-space systems when installed with approved brackets, davits, anchors, harnesses, and procedures.

Browse Confined Space Rescue & Descent Equipment for related system components.

Should self-retracting lifelines be inspected before use?

Yes. Inspect SRLs according to the manufacturer instructions and the employer's fall-protection inspection program. Check line condition, housing, connectors, gates, labels, retraction and locking function, impact indicators, mounting hardware, contamination, and any model-specific inspection points. Remove equipment from service when rejection criteria are found.

What standards should Canadian workplaces check for SRLs?

Self-retracting lifeline requirements depend on the product, jurisdiction, and intended application. Many products reference applicable CSA Z259-series standards, but the exact standard and certification are model-specific. Confirm the product documentation, workplace fall-protection program, engineered system requirements, and provincial or territorial regulations before use.

Can Keyline Safety supply self-retracting lifelines for an entire crew?

Yes. Keyline Safety can support crew, project, and facility orders. Share quantities, worker applications, harnesses in use, required line lengths, web or cable preference, single- or twin-leg needs, anchor location, leading-edge conditions, retrieval needs, preferred brands, and project-specific standards when requesting a quote.

Shop self-retracting lifelines in Canada for construction, utilities, industrial maintenance, confined-space work, and other working-at-height applications. Compare personal SRLs, web and cable lifelines, single- and twin-leg configurations, leading-edge models, extended-length devices, and retrieval-capable units.
